I can be quite ticklish, so I understand this weakness. Even when he’s not wearing the belt, it still affects him. The belt stops him from doing anything other than falling to the ground and laughing. SpongeBob uses the belt to get him to behave when teaching the villain to be good. When we first meet Man Ray, he’s wearing the famous tickle belt. But that doesn’t mean he can handle anything and everything because he has one significant weakness. Man Ray might be smart and know how to get his way. Of course, that skill is also detrimental to Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, as well as SpongeBob and Patrick. That allows him to adapt to whatever his opponents are doing, which is a nice skill for anyone. The character also seems to be able to think quickly on his feet and create a new plan when necessary. Man Ray can also fly and take off his head to use as a boomerang. For one, he can shoot lasers out of his hands, which seems useful for a villain. Man Ray has some impressive skills despite not being the most realistic undersea creature. Man Ray’s Abilities Image From SpongeBob Fandom He manages to convince SpongeBob and Patrick that he wants to be good, and they let him escape, only for him to go rob a bank. In that episode, we learn that Man Ray can also manipulate others and take advantage of their good nature. However, I’ve had moments where people just don’t seem to understand what I’m saying, which is frustrating. Honestly, I relate to Man Ray in that scene, not because I’m evil and trying to be good. Things can also annoy him quickly, especially when he’s trying to learn to be good, but Patrick doesn’t do an excellent job of helping. Man Ray can be rude and, well, evil as he is an evil villain. The small exception is the gold lock on his tickle belt. His helmet, gloves, boots, and underwear are all blue, while the rest of his outfit is the color red. Man Ray is also quite tall compared to most other characters in SpongeBob SquarePants. We learn that he doesn’t have a head under the helmet, but he can live without the helmet on all of the time. ![]() Instead, he has a helmet in the shape of a manta ray. Man Ray has a human-like body, but he doesn’t have a standard face or head of a person. Man Ray’s Physical Traits Image From SponeBob Fandom ![]() But I imagine they don’t consider their nemesis to be their family. Of course, if you consider where he lives at the start of the series, his “family” would be Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. He may have lived with the scientist who created him, but that scientist might not be around anymore. If we go with the mad scientist theory, Man Ray wouldn’t have a family at all. Using the mutated manta ray theory, maybe his family abandoned him. I also couldn’t find any information on Man Ray’s family, so he might not have any relatives. Some fans have speculated he’s about 80 years old, but his body is more like a 50-year-old after the tartar sauce trap. We can guess he’s about as old as Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, though. Then again, his helmet looks like a real animal, the manta ray, so maybe a manta ray mutated and became the famous villain. I don’t think he was born underwater like a normal creature. ![]() But his head is inside a helmet, so perhaps some mad scientist created him. Maybe he ended up underwater like Mermaid Man did, such as drifting out to sea. First, he could have been born on land since he has the shape of a human. I couldn’t find out much about where Man Ray was born, but I have a few theories. Actors Who Played: John Rhys-Davies, Bob Joles. Most Memorable Moment: When he tries to be good, but Patrick annoys him (that scene has become a meme). But SpongeBob and Patrick manage to free him, which leads to a lot of chaos. Man Ray from SpongeBob is one of the biggest villains that Mermaid Man fights and captures. Then, you can better understand the memes and create your own. You should consider a full guide if you want to learn more about the character. That includes all of the memes and posts featuring Man Ray and Patrick. I grew up watching SpongeBob SquarePants, and I continue to love the show and its associated online content. Without a good Man Ray SpongeBob guide, you could miss out on some fun facts. I love seeing a new Man Ray meme, but I wonder how many of those meme creators know the full story. Is that accurate?ĭEREK WOODIE: To a certain degree. In the episode, the walruses also greet each other through blowing in each other’s faces. So thank you for that answering that part of our question about the episode. They are closer to predators, bears-polar bears or grizzly bears-and it’s just something where they would rather be out on an ice floe where they have more protection and feel more at home. HOST: So is there a reason why they are.are they scared of other animals? Are they just uncomfortable?ĭEREK WOODIE: They’re just out of their element when they are up on land. They do not like to have anything unusual around them other than other walruses. Those can cause stampedes and cause the walruses to try to get back to the water as soon as they can. If they are required to haul out on land because of the lack of sea ice, they’re very, very skittish, or easily spooked, so they don’t like anything else around them, whether it be a small Arctic fox up in the area or a polar bear. They normally like to haul out on ice floes in small numbers out in the middle of the sea or the ocean and stay away from anything. That part of the story is pretty real to life. In real life, do walruses actually not like to share space with other species?ĭEREK WOODIE: Very much so. So Captain Barnacles, Kwazii, and Peso have to disguise themselves as a fellow walrus to sneak into the colony and get Peso’s medical bag. In this episode, the walruses don’t really like other animals near their colonies. Well, thank you so much again for being on this episode to talk about the Octonauts adventure with the walrus. We have a small population of Steller sea lions, ice seals, and sea otters here that we look over, and also we have a rescue and rehabilitation program, which covers almost the entire state of Alaska. Can you start off by telling us a little bit about your role at the Alaska SeaLife Center?ĭEREK WOODIE: Yeah, I’m the curator of mammals here at the Alaska SeaLife Center. It’s quite the honor to be asked to participate in these. Thank you, Derek, for joining us!ĭEREK WOODIE: Thanks for inviting me. He’s joining us via phone all the way from Seward, Alaska, so you might notice a little difference in sound quality for today’s interview. Our guest today is Derek Woodie from the Alaska SeaLife Center offsite link. Scientists at the Alaska SeaLife Center are studying how walruses use these land areas and how they might respond to the new challenges that the land brings. As sea ice dwindles, more walruses are spending more time on land. Like polar bears, walruses rely on sea ice for their survival. When a swimming walrus wants to get out to rest on an ice floe, it can dig its tusks into the ice and use that leverage to haul its blubbery body out of the water.Īlthough they aren’t currently listed as endangered, walruses still face many threats. They can also use these tusks like built-in ice picks. Both male and female walruses sport the species’ trademark tusks, which help them defend against predators and search for meals of clams, sea cucumbers, and crabs on the ocean floor. Walruses are the biggest seals on earth, with the biggest ones weighing in at about 4000 pounds-just about as much as the average car. HOST: Before we begin our chat, let’s set the stage for today’s deep dive. ![]() HOST: When a walrus steals Peso's medical bag, mistaking it for a funny-looking white clam, the Octonauts must travel inside a walrus colony to find it! This led to an opening in the market for a lighter, faster sword, and the Rapier stepped in to fill it. As suits of armor declined in popularity, the need for heavy, armor-piercing weapons also declined. These new guns made heavy suits of armor-like those worn by knights-less effective and a cumbersome liability. Watch now.Īccording to, the rise of the Elizabethan Rapier can be traced to the invention of early personal firearms. Two finalists head to their home forges to make one of history’s most notorious weapons, the rapier, a sharply pointed sword that can kill with just one thrust. It was designed to be used with brute force rather than precision. They could be wielded from horseback or in hand-to-hand combat and with one or two hands. Most examples of this type of weapon (depending on the century) had blades typically 28-31 inches in length, with handles that eventually measured around 6 inches as the weapon evolved through the years. This set of overlapping circles can help you visualize where your subjects are similar and where they differ. A “Venn diagram” can often be helpful when brainstorming. This will help you see which points are the major ones you want to focus on, and can help guide you when you formulate your thesis. Take a little time to brainstorm about how your chosen subjects are similar and different. You probably won’t be able to jump straight from deciding on your topic to having a thesis, and that’s okay. If you say “The Hunger Games and Battle Royale are both similar and different,” and your friend asked you “So what?” what would your answer be? In other words, why bother putting these two things together?īrainstorm your topic. It can be helpful to consider the “So what?” question when deciding whether your subjects have meaningful comparisons and contrasts to be made. For example, ask yourself: What can we learn by thinking about “The Hunger Games” and “Battle Royale” together that we would miss out on if we thought about them separately?.X Trustworthy Source University of North Carolina Writing Center UNC's on-campus and online instructional service that provides assistance to students, faculty, and others during the writing process Go to source “Meaningful” comparisons and contrasts do more than simply point out that “Topic A and Topic B are both similar and different.” A good compare and contrast essay will help your readers understand why it’s useful or interesting to put these two subjects together. See Chapter 15 "Readings: Examples of Essays" to read a sample compare-and-contrast essay.Make sure that your subjects can be discussed in a meaningful way. Make sure to use comparison and contrast phrases to cue the reader to the ways in which you are analyzing the relationship between the subjects.Īfter you finish analyzing the subjects, write a conclusion that summarizes the main points of the essay and reinforces your thesis. You may also consider your particular approach to the subjects as well as the nature of the subjects themselves some subjects might better lend themselves to one structure or the other. The organizing strategy that you choose will depend on, as always, your audience and your purpose. The body of the essay can be organized in one of two ways: by subject or by individual points. Your thesis should come at the end of the introduction, and it should establish the subjects you will compare, contrast, or both as well as state what can be learned from doing so. Once you have decided on a topic, introduce it with an engaging opening paragraph. The more divergent the two subjects initially seem, the more interesting a comparison essay will be.įirst choose whether you want to compare seemingly disparate subjects, contrast seemingly similar subjects, or compare and contrast subjects. Rather, you might try to compare how apples and oranges are quite similar. For a comparison essay, you likely would not choose two apples or two oranges because they share so many of the same properties already. Similarly, to focus on comparison, choose two subjects that seem at first to be unrelated. Drawing distinctions between elements in a similar category will increase the audience’s understanding of that category, which is the purpose of the compare-and-contrast essay. ![]() For example, Red Delicious apples are sweet, while Granny Smiths are tart and acidic. For example, if you wanted to focus on contrasting two subjects you would not pick apples and oranges rather, you might choose to compare and contrast two types of oranges or two types of apples to highlight subtle differences.
